The 5 Ws of a good night under the stars.

It does not matter wether you want to sleep under the stars in a tent, a tarp or with only the stars as your roof, but if you want to have a as comfortable as possible night and, not the least, wake up in the morning, check for the 5 Ws.

The 5 Ws are useful for a family trip but also in case you are forced to spend a night outside. It follows basic logic to make the night safe and enjoyable, but the same principles also apply to what you carry with you when hiking and how you dress when you are out there.

The 5 Ws target basic human needs such as core temperature, hydration, nutrition and staying out of harm’s way. It is important not to prioritise or take care of this needs in any order. It is a constant balance. It does not make sense to look for food when you are dehydrated as you can live easily multiple weeks without food, but after three days without water you will be in danger. If you are cold and lost, hypothermia is your first concern.

Do not forget wildlife. Be aware of what is living in the area you are visiting as some animals might represent danger. And be careful where you put your feet, what you hold to keep your balance etc.

You might want to carry your water but finding a source of water from which you can sanitise water is a good idea. As it…
